COURTROOM UPDATE - 6/6/08: Uncle says Entwistle 'handled the firearms well'

posted at 4:30 p.m.: Neil Entwistle was taught how to load and shoot a gun by Rachel Entwistle's stepfather and uncle, her uncle said today during the first day of testimony in the double murder trial.

Lloyde Cooke, Rachel Entwistle's uncle and Priscilla Matterazzo's brother, told the jury he and Joe Matterazzo showed Entwistle how to shoot and load various weapons.

"He handled the firearms well," Cooke said.

Cooke will undergo cross examination from the defense on Monday.

In all, five witnesses testified today, including Rachel's mother, Priscilla.

On the stand, she spoke in a matter-of-fact voice, but often had her head bowed during other testimony.

Today was the first time both Rachel's and Neil's family were in court. Neither family made eye contact.

During opening statements, Yvonne Entwistle often had her head down and her husband, Clifford, put his arm around her and squeezed her reassuringly.

posted at 9:43 a.m.: The courtroom is the most full it has been all week as opening statements were set to begin at 9 a.m.

Among the dozens of both American and British reporters are several spectators.

Additionally, about a dozen members of Rachel Entwistle's family members are in the courtroom, including her step-father, Joe Matterazzo. Her mother, Priscilla Matterazzo, is not in court.

Neil Entwistle's parents, Clifford and Yvonne Entwistle, are also in the courtroom. Rachel and Neil's families have not looked at each other.
