COURTROOM UPDATES: 6/2/08

posted at 5:15 p.m.: Six more people have been deemed qualified jurors, while several people have been dismissed. So far, eight jurors have been determined qualified by Judge Diane Kottmyer.

Juror selection will continue tomorrow. After 16 jurors are found to be qualified, they will be further questioned. Each side can challenge up to 16 jurors without cause.

posted at 2 p.m.: So far, nine jurors have been questioned. Two have been qualified, which does not mean they are being seated, but they could be picked at a later time. Several other jurors were excused for various reasons.

Also, 14 other jurors were excused because they would not be able to hear the entire trial due to time constraints. Judge Diane Kottmyer is expected to question up to 25 more potential jurors after the lunch break.

posted at 10:45 a.m.: Judge Diane Kottmyer again denied the defense's motion to dismiss the indictment or to move the trial. Elliot Weinstein, one of the defense attorneys, argued again that the media coverage would make it difficult to get a fair trial.

Weinstein cited today's Boston Herald front-page photo and headline. Kottmyer also refuses to remove a microphone from the defense table.

Return later for more updates as they become available.
